I had the pleasure of attending the University of Iowa’s Marketing Institute’s 5th anniversary event. The Institute is the first of it’s kind for Big 10 universities, and I had the pleasure of being a graduate of the 2nd class it produced.

Three generations of alums!:

MI 2015 Alums

The Marketing Institute selects the top 10-15% of the marketing students from the Universities Tippie College of Business and places them in projects consulting businesses on real-world business problems. While in the Marketing Institute, I consulted for Young Africa and the University’s College of Nursing Nurse Practitioner Program.

I spent a couple weeks reflecting on what I have learned in my years post-college, and presented students, board members, and faculty with a “How-To Guide” of how to Hustle (or: what to do to get the life you want).

MI 2015 TEDTalk

Through my personal experiences, I have learned to hustle in three ways: Connecting, Planning, and Learning. I always tell students that life will look at your “plan” and laugh, but what you can do is learn to roll with the punches and never lose sight of your end goal. Like most students, I do not know what I want to be when I “grow up,” and thats ok. What I have found is that if you can figure out what you’re good at, and figure out what you’re so good at that people will pay you do to it, that you can take those skills and leverage them to eventually land a career that you’re passionate about.

The Institute will be posting the talks to their website, and when that happens, I will be sure to provide the link, as the video will do much better justice than than I can provide in a single post.
